English as an Additional Language/ Dialect (EAL/D) is a support program offered to identified students who speak another language at home or are from Language Other than English Background (LBOTE). It is a federally funded support program.
Support may be delivered in-class or as part of a small withdrawal group. Support is provided by specialist EAL/D teachers. EAL/D teachers collaboratively work with classroom teachers to design programs to support EAL/D students' successful participation in informal and formal situations.
The focus of this support is typically Literacy: Oral Communication, Reading and Responding, and Writing.
Students who are newly arrived in Australia are given support priority to encourage a smooth transition into the school environment and explicit teaching in English language development.
